I think I used a tosh portege c 2003, running xp stripped to just basic wireless comms etc. Probably many ways of doing this but its cheap since you gave apple box and if you have an old laptop around - you barely need much processor power in modern terms.

Then you can install software to talk to your apple tv box, load plex or whatever on that ? ( dont know - dont have apple tv box ) and away you go - maybe. Plug the hdd that you want to share into the laptop. Nowadays maybe Plex or whatever is the current flavour of the month for servers. I remembered that before I got the NAS, I just used an old kaptop and put Serviio on it to convert it into a media server and stream over wifi. I see the problem there must be something out there surely ? but I also haven't found one. Yes, the ones I've been looking at all seem to have a 2tb limit for a connected drive.
I guess if it is rubbish I can just return it to amazon. Might have a look at one of these myself to take on holidays - always strugglng for space for films on an ipad then connecting it by hdmi dongle /cables to the usually basic tv's they have. I know nothing about generic media players but did a quick look at amazon and saw this cheapo box for example: ( though this particular one seems to have a 2TB limit on HDD ? ) Looks like Roku have stopped making boxes with usb input connectors for external media on hdd.

The android boxes I've looked at have both USB and HDMI connections, so could I have an hdd connected to it via USB, then connect the box to the tv via HDMI, but have the android box connected via wifi to the internet for updates etc? In which case I wouldn't be able to connect it via cable to the tv. Guess it would have been very slow in any case. I think you are right - you used to be able to connect some Synology DS's to a wireless network by a usb dongle connected to one of the usb ports but that seems to have been withdrawn in recent OS upgrades. I do have wifi throughout the house (TP Link Deco mesh system), but it was my understanding that the NAS unit has to be connected to the main wifi router with an Ethernet cable? I took this to mean there is no WiFi in the living room which is presumably where the current TV is. The OP has wifi - he only said that the tv has no wireless connection. I don’t think a Roku or any other off-the-shelf/retail product is likely to work if there is no network connectivity at the TV's location. Yeh - maybe a roku 3 box or whatever has replaced this ( agptek ? )with a usb hdd input and your external hdd's? No one can say you're doing it wrong." -Charles M. Am I simply looking for an android box, not to access other tv channels, but solely as a media player? I have an Apple TV 4K but it can't (surprise, it's Apple) connect to an external drive. It would have to be a device that can read from large disks.
My wifi router is in our basement with no easy way to connect to a NAS in the living room, so perhaps I'm simply looking for a way to have a large hdd or two with all the files on them, connected to a device with playback software, connected to the tv, via HDMI or USB. 4K SMART tv in future but not for a while.

I'd like it to be placed behind my tv, which is 1080p but not wi-fi capable I know, dark ages here. I should be clear that these are my own photos and home videos, not a purchased media library. In answer to some of the questions, yes I want one source to store all of my photos and videos with ample room for future files. Thank you to those who have replied your suggestions and questions have helped me refine what I want exactly.
